This is a rock formation along the Catalina Highway that goes from northeast Tucson (Arizona) up to Mount Lemmon. It's situated right along the highway and is about 100 feet above the road at its tallest point. As this was taken from the opposite side of the road you can get a feel for just how precarious this looks when there in person.

This was taken from the Santa Catalina Mountains looking south towards Tucson's east side. The weather was pretty bizarre in the Tucson area on Tuesday (October 4th). I got a few minutes to watch this storm ramping up. It looked like a large dust storm reaching up to meet an equally large rainstorm coming down. To the northwest of Tucson there were several major dust storms, one large enough to cause a 50-vehicle pile up on the 10 Freeway.

One of several shelves full of National Geographics in my parent's garage. The issues on this one span 54 years. The earliest issue (February, 1954) was most likely sitting on the coffee table when I was brought home from the hospital as a newborn. I grew up with these. They served as an introduction to the world and to the world of photography.

Constitution Hall, Washington DC

This is taken from the south side of the building and may actually be of the DAR Museum rather than the actual hall. Constitution Hall is located just west of and midway between the Washington Monument and the White House.

Luray Caverns

Reflecting pool in Luray Caverns, Virginia. The water is only a few inches deep and, when perfetly calm, gives the illusion that one is looking at a deep cavern with both stalactites and stalagmites. It's really quite beautiful, but also difficult to photograph well while on a group tour (let alone while using an older digital camera). As this ended up being shot at 1/10th of a second, hand held (f2.8, ISO 800) I'm just pleased it came out as clear as it did.

Not really sure what's normal for the western side of Virginia but it seems to me that spring arrives late there (or at least did this year). Interesting fact about the dogwood flower: what you might think are large pink flower petals are actually bracts, or modified leaves. The actual flowers are tiny and are located in the center of the bracts.

Not many flowering plants out there that can take full on desert sun and cold snaps down to 20° F. Luckily, this one looks really nice as well.

There's a corollary in formal complexity theory that says creativity happens only when and where chaos meets order. I was reminded of that when I came across several streets here in my neighborhood that have had cracks in the asphalt sealed with tar. There is something both ordered and chaotic about how asphalt cracks and the street maintenance crew has, unintentionally, highlighted the results. I find these lines interesting and often surprisingly beautiful.

This is a very unique plant. There are lots of them growing around here but this is the only one with leaf tips like this. I'm not sure why but suspect it's because it is shaded by a tree and appears to be getting more water than most others. (Here's another photograph of the same plant I took 5 months earlier.)

Not sure what to call it when you make a fake polaroid out of a photo of you holding a real polaroid which, however, was never exposed and is simply reflecting something in a window ...

This all got started when I found a forgotten Polaroid SX-70 in a closet at my folk's house that had a film pack with two unexposed shots still in it. Today I was conversing with Maureen Bond about this and about the Impossible Project's film packs (which apparently come in flavors, or at least one flavor and two colors). Anyway, that got me looking at the camera again and I pulled the film pack out of it and then pulled the film out of that and ... noticed it almost looked like it had an image on it if I held it just right so it would reflect a nearby window ...

To a small degree this was inspired by a photograph of Abelardo Morrell's, entitled Kleenex, from his truly wonderful Home series. For some reason my memory of his photo was that the light and dark on the background wall was opposite that on the box. Having just looked at it again, though, I see it's not. I find it's a bit amusing, then, that my memory of what I liked most about that particular photo was precisely that "opposition" of light and dark. Oh well. So this is a flawed homage, I suppose, but a homage nonetheless.

Maybe it's something in the way I see that's always been there, but I suspect the reason I didn't simply pass by this plant in a neighbor's front yard is because I've become a photographer. Instead I saw it and went back and got my camera.

I've been back several more times now. I love the leaf tips on this plant, especially in the morning light. They're like ballet and music and sign language and fireworks, ...

And I love that I didn't miss out on this simple pleasure.

Bobcats (about as dangerous to humans as feral cats but quite a bit more shy) hunt in huge territories (thousands of acres) which they wander through continuously. It's rare that you see one, let alone 2. The only time they stay put anywhere is when they have kittens to feed. What I suspect in this case is that mom was just returning to her normal wandering hunting lifestyle and junior was, unbeknown to him or her, now enrolled in bobcat school.

In the brief time I was able to see them before they disappeared around a neighbor's house the mom was all about hunting - poking around in all the bushes - and junior was all about being a kitten: batting at leaves, "play attacking" mom and jumping 2 feet straight up in the air when startled by something it stepped on. Except for its paws (which are huge) it looks pretty much like a large house cat with a bobbed tail. Mom, on the other hand, at about 30 pounds looks a little more intimidating.
