The future "Freise HOPE House"

This is in what is planned to become the Freise HOPE House, a transitional care facility for the mentally ill. It is of the same room shown in the photograph, "a beautiful light."

a beautiful light

The bright sunlight reflecting off the wooden floors onto the plaster walls creates a really wonderful and warm feeling in this room. This is in one of two adjacent buildings that will, should all go well, become a transitional care facility for people experiencing mental health problems. I was there with a group who had volunteered to clean up the two buildings.

In a previous life, from 1927 to 1950(?), this was a successful, privately owned and operated maternity hospital. The owner was Wilhelmina Freise (1878-1953). You can read a bit more about her here. And here's a photo (of a photo) showing what we think is the same room in use as a nursery probably back in the 1940s.

Found at a vacant building in Bakersfield, CA in what used to be the Freise Maternity Hospital (in operation from 1927 to 1950). The identity of the original photographer, as well as that of the nurse, are unknown. The photo was probably taken in the late 1940s or perhaps 1950.

three leaves in a green vase

There's a tendency, I think, for people to look at a still life like this for only a moment when, in fact, it needs a bit more than that of your time. The lines, the angle of those lines, the relationship between those angles and the aspect ratio of the frame, the depth of the shadows and the amount of color that appear in them, ... none of these is there by mistake.
